A Letter to God

from positivechristianity.net

Our dog, Abbey, died on May 23. The day after Abbey passed, my 4-year-old daughter, Meredith, was heartbroken. She wanted to write a letter to God so that He would recognize Abbey in Heaven.

She told me what to write, and I did.

Then she placed two pictures of Abbey inside the envelope. We addressed it to God in Heaven, and Meredith insisted on putting two stamps on it—“because it could be a long way to Heaven,” she said. We included our return address, and I let her drop it in the mailbox at the post office that afternoon.

She was absolutely certain the letter would get to God, and I wasn't about to take that belief away from her.

Then, on Labor Day, after taking the kids to the museum in Austin, we returned home to find a package wrapped in gold paper sitting on our front porch. It was addressed to Meredith.

She excitedly took it inside and opened it.

Inside was the book When Your Pet Dies by Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers). Taped to the front cover was the envelope we had sent—with our original letter inside. On the opposite page was one of the pictures of Abbey. On the last page was the second photo and a handwritten note on pink paper that read:

Dear Meredith,

I know that you will be happy to hear that Abbey arrived safely and soundly in Heaven. The pictures you sent helped a lot—I recognized Abbey right away!

You know, Meredith, she isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with Me (just like it stays in your heart), young and running and playing. Abbey loved being your dog—you should know that.

Since we don’t need our bodies in Heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep things in. So I’m sending your beautiful letter and pictures back to you, so you’ll have this little memory book to keep.

One of My angels is taking care of this for Me. I hope this little book brings you comfort.

Thank you for your beautiful letter. And please thank your mother for helping you send it.

What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

God blesses you every day. And remember—I love you very much.

By the way, I am in Heaven… and everywhere there is love.

Signed,

God (and one of His special angels who wrote this letter after God told HER the words)
