50 Dollars
A man came home from work late one evening, tired and irritated, and found his five-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
“Daddy, may I ask you a question?” the son asked.
“Yeah, sure. What is it?” the man replied.
“Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”
“That’s none of your business. Why do you ask?” the man said angrily.
“I just want to know. Please tell me—how much do you make an hour?”
“If you must know,” the father replied, “I make $50 an hour.”
“Oh,” the little boy said quietly, lowering his head.
Then he looked up and asked, “Daddy, may I please borrow $25?”
The father became furious. “If the only reason you asked that is to borrow money for some silly toy or nonsense, then go straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don’t work hard every day for childish frivolities.”
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.
The man sat down and grew even angrier. How dare his son ask such questions just to get money?
After about an hour, the man had calmed down and began to think. Maybe the boy really needed something. He didn’t often ask for money. Feeling regret, the man went to his son’s room and opened the door.
“Are you asleep, son?” he asked.
“No, Daddy, I’m awake.”
“I’ve been thinking,” the man said softly. “Maybe I was too hard on you earlier. It’s been a long day, and I took my frustration out on you. Here’s the $25 you asked for.”
The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh, thank you, Daddy!” he exclaimed. Then he reached under his pillow and pulled out some crumpled bills.
Seeing that the boy already had money, the father felt irritation rising again.
“Why do you want more money if you already have some?” he grumbled.
“Because I didn’t have enough before,” the boy replied quietly. “But now I do.”
He looked up at his father and said, “Daddy, I have $50 now. Can I buy one hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.”
The father was crushed. He wrapped his arms around his little son and begged for his forgiveness.
This is a gentle reminder to all of us who work so hard. Let us not allow time to slip through our fingers without spending it with those who truly matter—those closest to our hearts.
Remember to give someone you love that $50 worth of your time.
