Let Us Leave It Be

from www.PositiveChristianity.net

There are some things in life we shouldn’t continually revisit in our minds. Often, we need to remind ourselves what we choose to think about and hold onto—and what we need to let go.

I once had a dog named Bentley, a 150-pound golden retriever who was overly active. I signed him up for dog training. Anyone who’s done dog training knows the truth: the owner often gets more training than the dog. That was certainly my experience. Bentley never learned a thing—but I took away an important life lesson.

Our first session took place on a cold night in Kansas City. The trainer was a towering, forceful, athletic woman from Russia. On that first night, surrounded by 28 people and 24 dogs, she suddenly shouted with great authority: “SIT!”

Fifty-two living beings just stood there. I was the only one who sat down.

The course ran for six weeks, once a week. My dog failed completely. He didn’t learn anything—but I walked away with something I’ve used ever since.

When Bentley would take off chasing after an animal—like the time he went after a skunk—I’d shout, “LEAVE IT!” With any luck, he’d stop in his tracks and turn around.

He never did.

But I started using that command on myself.

Our human minds are often fascinated by, and drawn to, things that don’t serve us. Destructive thoughts, arguments, regrets, imagined scenarios—things that lead us nowhere good.

In those moments, I began to say to myself, silently but firmly: LEAVE IT.

That simple phrase has stayed with me ever since. It reminds me, in the moment, of the path I really want to follow, so I don’t get sidetracked or pulled away by things that don’t matter or help.

Sometimes, no matter how badly we want to go in a certain direction, it’s better to pause. A few minutes of rest can give us just enough clarity and control to make the right decision or speak the right word at the right time.

When you’re trying to resolve a conflict with someone and nothing seems to work, maybe the best thing you can do is let it rest. Sometimes, the wisest thing you can do is simply—leave it.

Life and intelligence are always with you, guiding and helping you.

Wisdom can influence every decision you make and every action you take—if you let it.

But sometimes, like Bentley chasing that skunk, we still run toward things we know aren’t good for us.

That’s the moment to hear that voice inside you say: LEAVE IT.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

There are some areas of my life where I realize I am on the wrong path.

I spiritually shout to myself LEAVE IT.

To habits that are not good for me I decree to myself LEAVE IT.

To blind alleys, and areas that I know that I must leave, I say LEAVE IT.

I may not always have the courage.

I may not always have the will.

Leg me to leave behind the things that I need to leave behind.

And move on.

POSITIVE DAILY AFFIRMATIONS:

LEAVE IT!

POSITIVE DAILY QUOTE:

"If you want to achieve excellence, you can get there today. As of this second, quit doing less-than-excellent work." Thomas J. Watson
