3-D Movie

I was on a personal cruise for relaxation and was excited to attend a presentation of a 3-D movie. Interestingly, it was a movie I would never have considered seeing, but it was going to be in 3-D.
People will go to see almost anything in 3-D. It can be the worst movie imaginable, but if its effects jump off the screen, it somehow becomes more enjoyable. Yet every day, our normal life is already in 3-D. So why do we rush to see a screen version, when we could be seeing even more powerful effects by simply viewing our lives through a more positive lens?
The theater was packed. Not a single empty seat. Hundreds of people were sitting there wearing 3D glasses. It was a funny sight, 300 people in a dark theater all wearing shades. I joined them and put mine on too.
Before the movie started, the opening credits showcased the real 3-D experience — bouncing balls seemed to jump off the screen and land in our laps. But once the actual movie began, it quickly became clear to me that something was off. The storyline was flat, and the effects were not immersive. After a few minutes, I whispered to my family, “This isn’t in 3-D.” I took off my glasses and could still see the screen clearly. If it had been in 3-D, the image would have been blurry without the glasses.
I looked around the theater. Everyone else was still wearing their glasses. I got a few strange looks, as if I was breaking the rules. I could almost hear their thoughts: “Foolish man — he’s going to miss something.”
The movie lasted almost two hours, or at least it felt like it. Not a single person around me took off their glasses. They fully believed they were seeing a 3-D experience. As we left the theater, I even heard a few people comment about how great the 3-D effects were. Their imagination convinced them. And I believe the rest just went along with it.
I didn’t enjoy the movie itself, but I’ll never forget the experience. It makes me smile every time I think of it. In that way, it became one of the sweetest movie experiences of my life. I literally couldn’t get the smile off my face for days.
Life has many dimensions, and I hope that no one chooses to live a one-dimensional life in a world filled with depth. Sometimes, we imagine things to be something they are not, and this can blind us to the reality of what truly is.
False imaginings can hold us back, especially a poor self-image. If we could only see the beauty in ourselves, we would be filled with confidence and joy. I remember once buying sunglasses off a late-night infomercial. When I wore them while riding my motorcycle, I couldn’t see clearly — but I thought I looked cool. I didn’t want to admit I couldn’t see. Sometimes, we care so much about how we appear to others that we forget to think for ourselves.
We also tend to follow what the crowd is doing, even if it’s something we wouldn’t ordinarily do. We assume the majority must be right. But each of us is empowered with individual wisdom. We must think for ourselves and never allow the crowd to take away our most precious possession — our ability to choose and discern with our own mind.
We’ve all heard of people who look at the past through rose-colored glasses. Honestly, I prefer that over those who view life through dark, cloudy lenses that block any vision of good. We find what we look for. If we’re looking for bad, we’ll find it. If we’re looking for good, we’ll find that too.
The truth is, we all tend to see what we expect to see. I’m a glass-half-full kind of person. I don’t believe in the idea of a half-empty life, and I certainly don’t believe in the word “impossible.”
I encourage you to live this way too — always looking for the good and expecting to find it. With spiritual vision, you’ll begin to see the extraordinary in the everyday. May every dimension of your life be blessed.
